2 min read

Robert Morris child abuse | Southlake, Texas – Robert Morris, founder of Gateway Church, has been indicted on five counts of lewd or indecent acts with a child, as confirmed by the Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office.

Morris, 63, who resigned as senior pastor in 2023, previously admitted to “inappropriate sexual behavior.” However, new legal documents reveal that the abuse took place over four years, beginning in 1982, when the victim, Cindy Clemishire, was just 12 years old.

According to official reports, Morris sexually abused Clemishire while staying in her family’s home in Hominy, Oklahoma. The indictment states that the abuse included inappropriate touching, removing her clothes, and, on one occasion, rubbing himself against her.

Clemishire, now an adult, recalled the trauma, stating, “He told me, ‘Never tell anyone about this. It will ruin everything.’”

Church Response & Public Backlash

Gateway Church, one of the largest megachurches in the U.S., issued a brief statement: “We are saddened by these revelations and are praying for all involved.” | Robert Morris child abuse

However, critics argue that the church’s leadership should be held accountable for supporting Morris over the years. \

Morris is expected to surrender voluntarily, according to authorities. The felony charges each carry a maximum sentence of 20 years, meaning he could face up to 100 years in prison if convicted on all counts.

Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond emphasized the severity of the case, stating: “There can be no tolerance for those who prey on children, especially those who abuse positions of spiritual trust.” | Robert Morris child abuse

History of Allegations & Calls for Justice

Clemishire initially sought restitution in 2005, but negotiations collapsed when Morris allegedly asked her, “How much would it cost for your silence?” She later hired Drummond in 2007 to pursue legal action, but the case only gained traction after she publicly accused Morris in 2023. | Robert Morris child abuse

“After almost 43 years, justice is finally catching up with Robert Morris,” Clemishire stated following the indictment.

Many churchgoers and religious leaders are now questioning the accountability of megachurch leadership and calling for increased transparency.

What Happens Next?

Morris is expected to appear before an Osage County judge for his initial court hearing this week. The trial will determine whether the former pastor will be held accountable for his decades-old crimes.
