MARCH 27,2025

Amid speculations of a political fallout, Malacañang clarified that no rift exists between President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and his sister, Senator Imee Marcos. The senator recently withdrew from the administration-backed Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas and raised concerns over former President Rodrigo Duterte’s arrest.

Marcos Family Political Tensions: President Marcos Has No Resentment

Palace Press Officer and Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro stated that President Marcos has not shown any animosity toward his sister despite ongoing political discussions.

“Senator Imee Marcos’ statements may suggest tension. However, the President has not indicated any rift in their relationship,” Castro said during a press briefing on Thursday, March 27.

She added that the President does not focus on such matters. “Let’s wait and see if he addresses this. But he is not one to take offense easily.”

Senator Imee’s Exit from Alyansa

After withdrawing from Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas, Castro noted that the senator may have made the right decision if she no longer aligns with the party’s advocacy.

“She said her beliefs and objectives differ from Alyansa’s, so leaving was likely the best choice. If she doesn’t support the party’s programs, maintaining a good working relationship would be difficult,” Castro explained.

The senator had previously skipped two major Alyansa rallies in Tacloban and Trece Martires, Cavite, citing concerns over Duterte’s arrest. She officially announced her departure from the administration’s slate on March 26, saying she “cannot stand on the same campaign platform as the rest of the Alyansa.”

Malacañang also addressed suspicions that the government was hiding information regarding Duterte’s arrest.

Castro clarified that invoking executive privilege is a constitutional right meant to protect sensitive matters concerning national security, diplomatic relations, and internal government deliberations.

“Some discussions must remain confidential due to legal and security concerns. This is not about hiding information but upholding the separation of powers and ensuring national stability,” she said.

‘No Political Motive’ Behind Duterte’s Arrest

Malacañang reiterated that Duterte’s arrest followed legal procedures and was not politically motivated.

“This is not personal. The government is fulfilling legal obligations and honoring its commitment to Interpol. There is no political vendetta here,” Castro affirmed.

She dismissed claims that the Philippines had no legal duty to arrest Duterte, pointing out that expert opinions suggest otherwise.

“Senator Imee’s opinion may be influenced by Duterte supporters, but legal experts see it differently,” she stated.
