Pilita Corrales A Timeless Voice in Filipino Music
Born María del Pilar Corrales y Garrido on August 22, 1939, in Lahug, Cebu City, Pilita lived a life full of purpose and passion. She sang her way into history with more than 100 albums, including the beloved classics “A Million Thanks to You” and “Kapantay ay Langit.”
She connected with diverse audiences by performing in Tagalog, Visayan (Cebuano), Spanish, and English, and even sang in Japanese and Italian. In 1966, she made history by sharing the stage with The Beatles during their Manila concert—the only Filipina ever to do so.
Pilita Corrales Legacy in OPM and Beyond
Pilita helped shape Original Pilipino Music (OPM) and inspired future generations. She earned a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Philippine Association of the Record Industry. The University of the Visayas honored her with a Doctorate in Music for her outstanding contributions.

In Australia, she gained fame in the 1950s and became one of the Great Dames of Victorian Radio and Television. The city of Melbourne named a street after her—an honor few artists receive.
A Life of Resilience and Family First
Janine Gutierrez, who is producing a documentary about Pilita’s life, highlighted her grandmother’s strength.
“She always got back up no matter what happened,” Janine said. “Everything she did was for her family.”
Pilita started singing at a young age to support her family after her father passed away. She raised two children—Jackielou Blanco and Ramon Christopher Gutierrez—and became a guiding light to her grandchildren, including Janine.
Celebrating a Cultural Icon
Pilita Corrales leaves behind a remarkable legacy. Her voice, grace, and spirit will continue to inspire Filipino artists and music lovers worldwide. She lived with heart, strength, and a love for music that touched millions.
Let us honor Asia’s Queen of Songs not just for her music, but for her courage, resilience, and love for her family.
