Drilon Sounds Alarm on Senate’s Delay
Former Senate President Franklin Drilon has expressed concern over the prolonged delay in the Senate’s handling of the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte. The House of Representatives approved the complaint back in February, yet the Senate has not moved to convene an impeachment court.
The charges include corruption, misuse of confidential funds, and threats against officials. Despite the serious nature of the allegations, the Senate has remained passive.
Drilon-Urging Senate to Act Swiftly
Drilon emphasized that the Senate has full authority to set its own calendar. He pointed out that if the Senate leadership had the political will, they could begin daily hearings and finish the trial before the current Congress ends on June 30.
“This delay sends the wrong message,” Drilon said. “The Constitution clearly directs the Senate to act on impeachment cases. Failure to do so undermines the rule of law.”
Political Interests vs. Legal Duty
Drilon also raised concern over the silence from the executive branch and Senate leaders. He noted that no special session has been called, despite calls from lawmakers and the public.
He believes this suggests political interests are taking priority. If the trial continues into the next Congress, it could face legal challenges that may delay justice even further.

Drilon urged senators to rise above political alignments. He stressed the importance of preserving the integrity of the impeachment process.
“The people deserve clarity. These delays weaken trust in our democratic institutions,” he said. “The Senate must act. It is their constitutional duty.”
