San Miguel Beer’s Jericho Cruz didn’t light up the stat sheet in Game 2 of the PBA Philippine Cup 2024 Finals, but he proved once again why basketball is more than just points.
In their 98-92 victory over TNT Tropang Giga at the Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday night, Cruz struggled offensively—scoring only six points on 1-of-10 shooting. But what he lacked in buckets, he more than made up for in hustle, heart, and high IQ plays.
Jericho Cruz Shines as Playmaker and Defensive Anchor
Rather than forcing shots, Cruz pivoted to impact the game in other ways. He dished out seven assists, grabbed six rebounds, and added a key steal to help the Beermen tie the PBA Finals series at 1-1.
“Earlier, I couldn’t shoot so that was all I could do—create for my teammates,” Cruz admitted postgame. “I just stepped up in other aspects because sometimes, I really need to.”
Even with star guard CJ Perez having an off-night (just 8 points on 4-of-15 shooting), Cruz kept the offense moving and the energy alive, proving the importance of team-first basketball.
Second Unit Powers Up: Cruz, Trollano, and Tiongson Step Up Big Time
Cruz highlighted the chemistry and hustle of the Beermen’s bench crew, giving credit to fellow role players like Don Trollano, who led the team with 22 points, and Juami Tiongson, who held it down defensively.
“All of us, as a team and a second unit, we step up. Don’s there, me as well, Juami also stepped up with his defense,” Cruz said. “I don’t think of myself. I think of the team because as a second unit, we move the ball really well.”
