Port Hedland Residents Urged to Shelter Immediately as Cyclone Zelia Bears Down
Authorities have issued an Emergency Warning for Port Hedland and surrounding areas, urging residents to take immediate shelter as it is now too dangerous to evacuate. Severe Tropical Cyclone Zelia, moving steadily toward the Pilbara coast of Western Australia, poses a serious threat to lives and homes, with conditions rapidly deteriorating.
The emergency warning zone extends inland to areas west of Marble Bar, as winds intensify and heavy rain begins to lash the region. Trees have already been uprooted in Port Hedland, and the cyclone’s destructive winds are expected to escalate further before landfall.

Threat of Destructive Winds and Flooding
The Bureau of Meteorology has warned that destructive wind gusts will hit coastal communities from Friday morning, with the cyclone’s very destructive inner core likely crossing the coast between De Grey and Karratha on Friday afternoon or evening.
Wind speeds could reach up to 160km/h overnight Thursday, increasing dramatically to 320km/h near the cyclone’s center as it makes landfall. Heavy rainfall is expected to continue through Friday, with 200 to 300mm of rain forecast daily, potentially causing widespread flooding.
Authorities have also predicted severe disruptions to the region, including the likely closure of the Great Northern Highway for several days due to flooding.
Emergency Response
In preparation for the cyclone, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) has deployed additional resources to the region, including five extra flood boats to Karratha and Port Hedland. Over 10,500 sandbags have been distributed, alongside specialized equipment strategically placed in key locations.
A DFES spokesperson stressed the severity of the situation:
“We can’t emphasize enough how severe this cyclone is. If you’re in the warning area, take action now. Shelter inside the safest, strongest part of your home.”
The spokesperson also issued a strong warning about road closures:
“If a road is closed, it’s closed for a reason – just 30cm of water can wash away a 4WD. Don’t risk your life or the lives of those with you.”
Impending Landfall
Cyclone Zelia’s powerful winds and torrential rains are expected to wreak havoc on the region, particularly between De Grey and Roebourne, with the worst impacts felt in Port Hedland by Friday morning. Authorities have advised all residents in the warning area to stay indoors and follow safety instructions.
As the storm intensifies, emergency services are urging residents to remain vigilant, emphasizing that preparation and adherence to warnings are critical to ensuring safety during this dangerous event.
