ASEAN Push: Peace, Security & Infrastructure

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines has the charm to become a top tourist spot in Southeast Asia. With its beautiful beaches, warm hospitality, and English-speaking locals, it stands out from its neighbors. But two issues are holding it back: peace and order and infrastructure.

The Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Inc. (FFCCCII) supports urgent action. President Victor Lim backed DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla’s call to address these deep-rooted problems.

“This is not a failure of appeal but of assurance,” said Lim. “Travelers admire our beauty, but they worry about safety. Crime, political unrest, and impunity have hurt our image.”

ASEAN-PH Tourism Behind Neighbors

Despite its stunning destinations like Boracay, Palawan, and Siargao, the Philippines welcomed only 5.95 million tourists in 2023. In contrast, Thailand drew 36 million and Malaysia 25 million.

Lim said the government must act fast to close this gap. Safety must become a national priority.

“We support Secretary Remulla’s call for a strong security drive,” Lim said. “Especially in tourist hotspots like Palawan and Cebu.”

Better Travel Experience Needed

Lim stressed the importance of modern airports, fast transport, and digital-ready tourism services.

“Tourists want seamless travel,” he said. “They want convenience, comfort, and safety.”

He also urged the government to simplify visa processes for visitors from China, Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea. These markets offer big growth potential.

Change the Global Narrative

Beyond fixing logistics and safety, Lim said it’s time to change how the world sees the Philippines.

“Let’s stop making excuses,” he said. “Let the world experience our beauty—without fear. And let them keep coming back.”

ASEAN Big Benefits for Filipinos: More Jobs & Local Growth

Improving tourism won’t just help the economy—it can create millions of jobs. From hotel staff, tour guides, and transportation operators, to local artisans, farmers, and micro-entrepreneurs, tourism boosts livelihoods across regions.

“Tourism is not just about visitors—it’s about empowering Filipinos,” Lim said. “It drives local business, uplifts communities, and creates inclusive growth.

Time to Act

Lim added that beyond fixing systems, the country must change how it’s seen globally.

“It’s time to stop the excuses,” he said. “Let the world feel our beauty, experience our culture safely, and come back again and again.” NOWTREND
