Honeylet Avanceña Faces Backlash from Malacañang Over Kidnapping Remarks

MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang slammed Honeylet Avanceña, longtime partner of former President Rodrigo Duterte, for mocking the government’s handling of recent violent crimes. Her controversial social media post about the kidnapping and killing of businessman Anson Que sparked outrage among officials and the public.

During a press conference, Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro addressed the issue head-on. “Lives were lost. This isn’t something to mock or turn into a joke,” she said firmly. Castro called for compassion and accountability, especially from public figures with influence.

In her now-viral remark, Avanceña wrote, “Congratulations to the Philippines, someone was kidnapped and killed again. That’s what you wanted. Congratulations again, congratulations BBM.” Her sarcastic tone directed at President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. did not sit well with many, including the Palace.

Government Acts Swiftly in Anson Que Case Despite Honeylet Avanceña’s Criticism

Following the discovery of Anson Que and his driver Armanie Pabillo’s bodies on April 9 in Rodriguez, Rizal, law enforcement responded immediately. The two had gone missing on March 29. Even though Que’s family paid a reported ₱100 million ransom, both victims were found dead, wrapped in nylon bags.

To address the situation, the Philippine National Police (PNP) formed a Special Investigation Task Force. Authorities are exploring a possible link between the kidnapping and Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs). The Department of Justice (DOJ) is also involved, ensuring the case is handled with urgency and transparency.

Castro Urges Respect and Accountability

Undersecretary Castro reminded Avanceña—and other public figures—that mocking national tragedies can only deepen the pain of those affected. “We should focus on finding solutions and bringing justice, not sowing division,” Castro stated. She also warned that if critics begin highlighting past extrajudicial killings under Duterte’s administration, the same outrage could follow.

Senator Joel Villanueva backed the Palace’s stance. He urged the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission to take a more aggressive role, especially when crimes may involve POGOs and other large-scale criminal operations.

Philippine Government Pushes Back Against Honeylet Avanceña’s Narrative

In response to the backlash, the government reiterated its commitment to justice and public safety. Officials encouraged unity during this time of national concern and reminded the public that careless statements only create distractions.

The DOJ and PNP continue working closely to pursue leads and bring justice to the victims’ families. The administration also stressed that it takes every violent crime seriously—and will act without hesitation to protect the people.
