MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Sara Duterte sparked new controversy during her Independence Day message in Malaysia. She said that I Won’t Bring Dad Home —but Senator Imee Marcos—who will bring home her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, from the International Criminal Court (ICC).

“Wherever I go, I bring her [Imee] along,” Sara said. “I always tell her, ‘I’m not the one to bring home former President Duterte. Your brother took him to The Hague—so it’s your job to bring him back.’”

Rodrigo Duterte was arrested in March and turned over to the ICC. He faces charges of crimes against humanity over his deadly war on drugs. Human rights groups claim the campaign left up to 30,000 people dead.

I Won’t Bring Dad Home-Sara Duterte Criticizes the Surrender

Sara shared that many foreigners expressed shock over the arrest.

“Everyone I talked to said the same thing—‘How could a country surrender its own citizen to a foreign court?’” she recalled. “In our case, it happened so easily. Even if I weren’t his daughter, I would still feel ashamed.”

Her remarks struck a chord with overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the audience, many of whom applauded in response.

Rift Between Marcos Siblings Widens

Senator Imee Marcos recently left her brother’s political slate ahead of the 2025 elections. She later received public backing from Vice President Duterte.

Meanwhile, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. defended the government’s move. He said the surrender was part of the Philippines’ obligation to INTERPOL and international agreements.

The ICC has set the confirmation of charges hearing for September 23, 2025.

Personal Trip with Political Impact

Although Sara Duterte’s office said the Malaysia trip was personal, her speech added fuel to ongoing political debates. It revived public discussions about the drug war, international justice, and family dynamics within the Marcos-Duterte alliance. NOW TREND
