MARCH 27,2025
MANILA, Philippines – In a bold political move, Senator Imee Marcos announced on Wednesday, March 26, that she is withdrawing from the administration-backed coalition, Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas.
“I cannot stand on the same campaign platform as the rest of the Alyansa. From the start of the election period, I have maintained my independence,” Marcos declared. She emphasized her commitment to personal principles over political alliances.
Imee Marcos Questions Transparency Over Duterte’s Arrest
Imee Marcos decision stems from recent Senate hearings on the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte. Marcos expressed frustration over the repeated use of executive privilege and the sub judice rule. She claimed government witnesses “appeared to be hiding essential facts.”
“The government insists it was complying with international commitments. However, efforts to obscure the truth only raise suspicions that the Constitution may have been disregarded and our sovereignty weakened by Duterte’s arrest,” Marcos stated.
She added that her preliminary findings would expose actions by the administration that contradict her principles.
Imee Marcos Stands for Sovereignty and Justice
Marcos stressed that national sovereignty and true justice should always take priority over political strategy.
“Beyond political advantage, the country’s sovereignty and justice for every Filipino must remain paramount,” she said.
Imee Marcos strong stance has been evident in recent events. Marcos skipped two key Alyansa rallies in Tacloban and Trece Martires, Cavite, citing Duterte’s arrest as her reason. As chair of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, she has been leading an inquiry into the Marcos administration’s role in Duterte’s arrest and possible surrender to the International Criminal Court (ICC). The former president faces charges related to human rights violations from his controversial war on drugs.
Alyansa Responds to Marcos’ Departure
Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas campaign manager, Rep. Toby Tiangco, responded to her withdrawal.

“We respect Senator Imee’s decision. We wish her luck in the campaign,” Tiangco said.
Political Shake-Up Ahead of the 2025 Elections
Marcos’ departure marks a major shift in Philippine politics ahead of the 2025 elections. With tensions rising over Duterte’s ICC case, her move could reshape alliances and influence voter sentiment.
As the elections draw near, her decision signals a shift toward political independence. It highlights her stance on national sovereignty and transparency. The move also raises critical questions about the future of Philippine leadership and the ongoing debate over Duterte’s legal battles on the global stage.
