Manny Pacquiao Returns to His First Love: Basketball

MANILA, Philippines — Boxing icon Manny Pacquiao may be known worldwide for his achievements in the ring, but for him, basketball was the first love.
In an interview with Philstar.com, Pacquiao shared that his love for basketball started during his childhood in Sarangani Province.
“My brothers and I played basketball every day on dirt or cement courts. We never missed a day,” he said.
Although boxing changed his life, his passion for basketball never faded.
“I used basketball to stay in shape during off-camp seasons and while training,” he added. “The speed of the game, the different play styles—it all excites me.”
Manny Pacquiao From the Ring to the Court
In 2014, Pacquiao surprised many when he joined the PBA as a playing coach for Kia Sorento. Standing at just 5-foot-5, he still managed to suit up for 10 games across three seasons.
“It was an honor to share the court with professionals,” he said. “I respect their dedication and hard work to reach that level.”
Manny Pacquiao-Building the MPBL: Basketball for All
In 2017, Pacquiao founded the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL). His goal? Bring competitive basketball closer to local fans and highlight hidden talent from the provinces.
“Not everyone can afford to watch PBA games in Manila,” he explained. “With MPBL, fans can walk or ride a jeep to see their hometown teams.”
The league has since grown rapidly. It features former PBA players, UAAP and NCAA talents, and standout local players.
“We have 180 PBA players, but over 120 million Filipinos love basketball. We had to create space for more talent,” Pacquiao emphasized.
MPBL Now Includes Women and Youth
The MPBL recently expanded. It now includes Women’s MPBL (WMPBL) and the Junior MPBL. Just this week, the Pilipinas Aguilas won the first-ever WMPBL championship.
“Sports changed my life. I want others to have that chance too,” Pacquiao said. “It teaches discipline, keeps you focused, and helps support your family.”
Partnering with 1xBet to Reach Global Fans
Pacquiao also announced a partnership with 1xBet, a global sports betting company. The collaboration aims to showcase Filipino basketball talent to a wider international audience.
“With 1xBet’s reach, we can promote Filipino players to the world,” he said. “It’s every Filipino’s dream to see a homegrown player in the NBA. We’re working to make that real.”
