Metro Manila Faces Extreme Heat: Health Warnings and Class Suspensions Issued
2 min read
MANILA – Brace for intense heat! Metro Manila is set to experience dangerously high temperatures, with a heat index of up to 46°C on Monday and Tuesday, according to PAGASA. As a result, several local government units (LGUs) have suspended classes to protect students from the extreme conditions.
Heat-Related Health Risks
Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to serious health issues, including:
- Heat cramps – Muscle pain due to dehydration.
- Heat exhaustion – Symptoms include dizziness, nausea, and excessive sweating.
- Heat stroke – A life-threatening condition requiring immediate medical help.
The Department of Health (DOH) strongly advises the public to take the following precautions:
✔️ Avoid direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. ✔️ Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. ✔️ Wear light clothing and use sun protection like hats and umbrellas. ✔️ Limit outdoor activities to reduce the risk of overheating.

Extreme Heat Spreads to Other Provinces
Apart from Metro Manila, extreme temperatures are also expected in Clark Airport (Pampanga) and Muñoz (Nueva Ecija) on Monday. The rising heat index signals the start of the dry season, as the northeast monsoon (amihan) weakens and hot, humid easterly winds take over.
PAGASA may declare the official start of the dry season in the first or second week of March.
Class Suspensions Due to Heat
Several Metro Manila cities have announced class cancellations as a safety measure:
🏫 Malabon, Las Piñas, Parañaque – All levels (public and private schools) suspended on Monday. 🏫 Caloocan, Valenzuela – Face-to-face classes canceled, but online learning will continue for kindergarten to senior high school students. 🏫 Private institutions such as La Salle Greenhills and Valenzuela City Technological College have also suspended classes.
Government Action on Extreme Heat
The Palace is closely monitoring the situation and is preparing strategies to mitigate the effects of extreme heat, particularly on agriculture and the economy.
Palace Press Office Undersecretary Claire Castro stated that agencies such as the Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), and the Department of Education (DepEd) are expected to release action plans to address the rising temperatures.
The DOH urges everyone to follow heat safety guidelines and remain cautious. Prioritizing health and safety is essential during this extreme weather.
