mRNA Vaccine Deal Canceled: US Drops $766M

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. government has canceled a $766 million deal with Moderna to develop a bird flu vaccine. The contract, signed just three days before President Donald Trump took office, aimed to create an mRNA vaccine targeting the H5N1 strain of avian influenza.

The cancellation is the latest move influenced by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., known for his opposition to vaccines. He has long promoted misinformation about immunization, sparking concern among health professionals.

mRNA Vaccine-Promising Results, Sudden Setback

Moderna announced the termination alongside early results from a Phase 1/2 trial. The study involved 300 people and tested the vaccine’s safety and immune response. Results showed a strong immune reaction and a solid safety profile.

“While losing funding from HHS adds uncertainty, we’re encouraged by the immune response and safety data,” said Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel. “These findings highlight the power of mRNA technology in fighting emerging health threats.”

Despite the funding cut, Moderna plans to seek new ways to continue the project. The company said it will explore partnerships or other funding options to push the vaccine forward.

Expert Reactions and Concerns

Public health experts reacted with concern. Dr. Ashish Jha, former COVID-19 coordinator under President Biden, criticized the move.

“The attack on mRNA vaccines is beyond absurd,” he wrote on X. “President Trump’s own Operation Warp Speed gave us mRNA vaccines that saved lives.”

mRNA Vaccine-Rising Threat of H5N1

The H5N1 virus has already been detected in birds and cattle across the U.S. Scientists warn it could mutate and infect humans, possibly triggering a new pandemic. Canceling the vaccine project now could delay preparedness for such a threat.

What’s Next?

Moderna remains committed to advancing the bird flu vaccine. With early clinical success and proven mRNA expertise, the company hopes to continue development through private or international partnerships. NOWTREND
