MANILA, Philippines — A taxi driver who reportedly charged P1,260 for a short five-kilometer ride between Terminals 3 and 2 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) is now under investigation—not just by authorities but also by the airport’s private operator.
The New Naia Infra Corp. (NNIC), which operates the country’s main international gateway, confirmed late Monday that they have launched their own internal probe following complaints that went viral on social media.
“Only accredited Transport Network Vehicle Services (TNVS) such as Grab and Joyride Super Taxi are allowed to pick up passengers at NAIA terminals,” NNIC stated. “Metered taxis may enter for drop-offs, but are strictly prohibited from accepting or soliciting passengers.”
Overcharging Airport Scam Sparks Online Backlash
The incident ignited public anger, especially among frequent travelers and overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), who often fall victim to such scams. Many netizens demanded stricter enforcement and sanctions against abusive taxi drivers.
“P1,260 for 5 kilometers? That’s daylight robbery,” one commenter wrote on Facebook.
Free Shuttle Buses Available
To help curb such abuses, NNIC reminded passengers that free inter-terminal shuttle buses operate every 15 minutes across all terminals. These services run on a continuous loop from morning until late evening, ensuring passengers can transfer terminals at no cost.
Overcharging Protecting Passenger Rights
As NAIA continues to modernize and expand, NNIC said it remains committed to ensuring passenger safety, transparency in pricing, and improving transport services. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and NNIC promises accountability and preventive measures moving forward. NOWTREND
