Pope Francis’ Health Update: Stable But ‘Risk of Crisis’ Remains, Vatican Says

2 min read

Vatican City – Pope Francis is in stable condition after a serious respiratory episode last Friday, according to Vatican officials. The 88-year-old pontiff has been battling double pneumonia and remains under close medical supervision.

Although he does not have a fever and can do light activities, Vatican sources say his recovery is still uncertain. His recent breathing difficulties, along with vomiting, required high-flow oxygen therapy. However, he was not placed on a ventilator.

Pope’s Condition: Encouraging but Still Serious

Despite his health struggles, Pope Francis is showing signs of improvement. Reports confirm he is receiving high-flow oxygen through nasal cannulas, which help him breathe more easily.

A Monday morning update from the Vatican stated that the pope “rested well” overnight. On Sunday, he even participated in Holy Mass, showing his dedication to his faith.

Vatican Officials, Global Support, and Continued Prayers

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, and Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, the papal chief of staff, visited Pope Francis on Sunday. Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni noted that despite his hospitalization, the pope remains deeply connected to the Catholic community worldwide.

On Sunday, the pope’s Angelus prayer, which he recently wrote, was shared from the hospital. In it, he called for global peace, stating: “From here, war appears even more absurd. Let us pray for tormented Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Myanmar, Sudan, and Kivu.”

Francis also reflected on his illness, calling it an opportunity to connect with the suffering of others. He described his frailty as a “blessing” and a chance to “share in body and spirit the condition of so many sick and suffering people.”

Longest Hospital Stay Since Becoming Pope

This hospitalization is Pope Francis’ longest since he became pope in 2013. His history of lung problems dates back to his youth when he had part of one lung removed due to pneumonia.

Doctors at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital are closely monitoring his condition, but it is unclear how long he will need to stay. Given his health, his schedule has been cleared. He will also miss next week’s Ash Wednesday service for only the second time in his 12-year papacy. Instead, a cardinal will lead the ceremony.

Global Catholic Community Unites in Prayer

Pope Francis’ health crisis has prompted prayers and well-wishes from Catholics and world leaders. On Friday, Argentinian Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernández prayed for the pope and others in need, saying: “It is close to the Holy Father’s heart that our prayers be not only for him but also for all those who bear the heavy burden of war, sickness, and poverty.”

As the world prays for Pope Francis, Vatican officials promise to keep the public updated on his condition. While challenges remain, his resilience and faith continue to inspire millions worldwide.
