MANILA, Philippines – With the midterm elections on May 12, 2025, fast approaching, an administration lawmaker is urging Filipinos to support candidates loyal to the Philippines. House Deputy Majority Leader Paolo Ortega emphasized that voters should prioritize national interest over foreign allegiance. In particular, he urged the public to reject candidates with ties to China.
“We need leaders who put the Philippines first, not those who support foreign powers like China,” Ortega stated. Furthermore, he warned, “This isn’t about foreign influence anymore; it’s about foreign interference aimed at weakening us from within.”
Pro-China-Foreign Influence in the Elections
Ortega’s remarks came after the recent revelation that a local marketing firm had partnered with the Chinese embassy to recruit “keyboard warriors” to influence public opinion. This effort, exposed during a Senate hearing, highlighted the growing threat of foreign intervention in Filipino politics.Pro-China
Ortega cautioned Filipinos to reject what he calls “Team China.” “Some candidates have foreign backing, and this is not just unacceptable; it’s dangerous for our sovereignty,” he said. Therefore, he called for a united effort to support Team Philippines in the elections. “We must stand firm for a stronger, independent nation.”
Disinformation Campaigns and the Need for Vigilance
Other political figures have echoed Ortega’s concerns. Liberal Party senatorial candidate Francis Pangilinan also warned the public about foreign-funded disinformation campaigns designed to manipulate voters. “These foreign forces not only want to control our elections but also aim to seize our territory in the West Philippine Sea,” Pangilinan pointed out. As a result, he stressed the importance of voting for candidates who put the nation’s sovereignty first.

Protecting Public Discourse
In addition, civil society organizations have raised alarms about the recruitment of trolls for spreading disinformation. Rico Domingo, lead convenor of the Movement Against Disinformation, called for immediate government action. He argued that the country must enforce laws against disinformation. “We need to protect our public discourse from foreign manipulation,” Domingo said.
Ultimately, as the elections draw nearer, voters are urged to carefully consider which candidates prioritize the Philippines’ sovereignty and security. At this critical juncture, every vote is essential in defending the nation.
