SEOUL, South Korea – Samsung Electronics co-CEO Han Jong-hee, a visionary leader who transformed Samsung TV business, has passed away at 63. Han suffered a fatal heart attack on Tuesday, according to an official statement from Samsung Electronics.
“He died from cardiac arrest today,” a Samsung spokesperson confirmed. He is survived by his wife and three children.
A Life Dedicated to Samsung TV Innovation and Technology
Han joined Samsung Electronics in 1988 and helped shape the company’s high-end TV sector. His efforts made Samsung’s LED TVs a household name worldwide.
“Han was central to the unveiling of Samsung’s world-class LED TVs. He led innovations that showcased the company’s technological leadership,” Samsung highlighted in a company biography published earlier this month.
Under Han’s leadership, Samsung TV reached and maintained the top spot in the global market. His dedication to innovation, product excellence, and user experience helped redefine the modern TV industry.
Samsung TV Business Faces New Challenges Amid AI Booms
Han’s passing comes at a pivotal moment for Samsung Electronics. The company faces growing challenges in the semiconductor and artificial intelligence (AI) markets. As the world’s largest memory-chip maker, Samsung has been working to develop next-generation AI chips while meeting rising demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips. These chips are key components in AI-driven graphics processing units (GPUs). However, SK hynix has become a primary supplier for Nvidia’s AI chips, creating stiff competition.
Because of these challenges, Samsung’s chairman, Lee Jae-yong, has urged the company to adopt a “do-or-die” mindset to stay ahead in the AI race. In October, Samsung acknowledged a “crisis,” raising concerns about its technological competitiveness and future growth.
Remembering Han Jong-hee: A Legacy That Lives On
As Samsung adapts to a rapidly evolving tech landscape, Han Jong-hee’s legacy of innovation will continue to inspire engineers, designers, and business leaders. His contributions to smart TV technology, display innovation, and the consumer electronics industry have left a lasting impact on Samsung and the global tech ecosystem.

While the world mourns a visionary leader, the industry watches how Samsung Electronics will tackle AI challenges while honoring Han’s dedication to technological excellence.
