2 min read

A powerful and dangerous winter storm is set to unleash blizzard conditions across our region starting this evening and continuing through Wednesday. If you have travel plans, it’s time to act fast and get to safety before conditions take a turn for the worse.

What to Expect: Extreme Winds and Whiteout Conditions

  • Wind Gusts: Expect ferocious winds of 50 to 60+ mph, causing dangerous blowing and drifting snow.
  • Rapid Snowfall: Rain will quickly transition to snow from west to east. For those in the Mankato area, this shift will occur between 6 PM and 8 PM.
  • Whiteout Conditions: The combination of intense snowfall and brutal winds will make visibility near zero, creating impossible travel conditions.
  • Snow Accumulation:
    • 5 to 8+ inches expected along a line from the southern Twin Cities through Mankato to Fairmont.
    • Areas west of this line, such as New Ulm, may see around 4 inches, while locations further east, like Waseca, could exceed 7 inches.
    • Even as little as 1-2 inches will be enough to create blinding whiteouts.

Urgent Safety Recommendations

  • Complete Travel by Late Afternoon: Conditions will deteriorate rapidly—one moment it’s manageable, and the next, roads will be impassable.
