Covid-19 Cases Rising Again in Southeast Asia

MANILA, Philippines — Senator Bong Go on Monday urged Filipinos to remain vigilant amid a fresh wave of Covid-19 cases reported in neighboring Southeast Asian countries.

“We must learn from the pandemic. This is why I continue to push for the establishment of our own virology center—so we won’t have to rely on other nations in times of crisis,” Go emphasized.

Although the World Health Organization (WHO) officially ended the emergency phase of the Covid-19 pandemic in May 2023, the virus continues to pose threats globally. Over 777 million cases and seven million deaths have been reported worldwide since December 2019. Recent surges have been noted in Thailand, Vietnam, and parts of Malaysia, sparking renewed fears of a potential regional resurgence.

Southeast Asia-PH Sees Major Drop in Covid Cases, But DOH Urges Caution

The Department of Health (DOH) clarified that no immediate Covid-19 threat has been identified in the Philippines, but they remain on high alert. According to DOH data, there’s been an 87% decrease in cases and fatalities this year compared to 2024.

  • 2025 Cases: 1,774
  • 2024 Cases: 14,074
  • Current Case Fatality Rate: 1.13%

In the past month, cases remained low:

  • March 23–April 5: 71 cases
  • April 6–19: 65 cases

The DOH is working with ASEAN partners to monitor potential surges and prevent local transmission spikes.

Updated Covid-19 Guidelines for Filipinos

While the situation remains manageable, health authorities strongly encourage the public to maintain basic preventive measures to avoid complacency:

  • Wear face masks in healthcare facilities and crowded places
  • Stay home when feeling sick
  • Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing
  • Wash hands regularly with soap and water
  • Seek early consultation when experiencing symptoms

The DOH is also updating its surveillance systems to include real-time reporting through barangay health units and city epidemiology teams. They have assured that vaccines and treatment supplies remain well-stocked.

Why It Matters: A Lesson from the Past

Senator Go reiterated that the Philippines must act proactively and not wait for another outbreak before taking action.

“The lesson from the pandemic is clear: preparedness saves lives. We must build our own research and testing capabilities through a national virology center and increase support for our healthcare workers,” he said.
