Passengers Left in Shock as Delta Flight Overturns Upon Landing

TORONTO (AP) — A Delta Air Lines jet carrying 80 people flipped upside down while attempting to land at Toronto’s Pearson Airport on Monday. Miraculously, all passengers and crew survived, though some sustained minor injuries, officials confirmed.

The harrowing incident unfolded around 2:15 p.m., as Delta Flight 2764 from Minneapolis approached the runway amid strong winds and swirling snow. The aircraft, a Mitsubishi CRJ-900LR, appeared to land normally before suddenly veering and overturning.

“It All Happened So Fast”

Among the passengers was Peter Carlson, a paramedic attending a conference in Toronto. He described the landing as “very forceful.”

“All of a sudden, everything just kind of went sideways. The next thing I know, it’s a blink, and I’m upside down, still strapped in,” Carlson told CBC News.

Unfolding Chaos and Quick Emergency Response

Video footage circulating on social media showed the overturned fuselage intact, with firefighters dousing a fire near the aircraft as shocked passengers carefully climbed out and walked across the snow-covered tarmac.

Toronto Pearson Fire Chief Todd Aitken confirmed emergency responders reached the site within minutes. Eighteen passengers were transported to local hospitals, while Ornge Air Ambulance evacuated a child to SickKids Hospital in Toronto.

What Went Wrong?

The cause of the crash remains unclear. Deborah Flint, CEO of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority, acknowledged the intense weather conditions but noted that the runway was dry, and no significant crosswinds were reported.

“We are very grateful there was no loss of life and that injuries were relatively minor,” Flint said in a press briefing.

Delta Airlines Responds

Delta CEO Ed Bastian expressed relief, stating:

“The hearts of the entire global Delta family are with those affected. We are fully cooperating with Canadian authorities in their investigation.”

Aviation Safety Concerns Mounting

This accident marks the fourth major aviation incident in North America within three weeks:

  • Jan. 29: A commercial jetliner and Army helicopter collided near Reagan National Airport, Washington, D.C., killing 67 people.
  • Jan. 31: A medical transport plane crashed in Philadelphia, killing seven people (six on board, one on the ground).
  • Feb. 6: A plane crash in Alaska claimed 10 lives.

The last major accident at Pearson occurred in 2005, when an Air France Airbus A340 skidded off the runway and caught fire. All 309 passengers and crew survived.

What’s Next?

Investigators are analyzing the black box data and pilot communications to determine what caused the Delta jet’s shocking flip. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is leading the probe.

As the aviation industry grapples with a spike in accidents, safety experts urge a deeper look into weather preparedness, aircraft stability, and landing protocols.
