The Story Behind ‘Rata de Dos Patas’: The Song That Made Paquita la del Barrio an Icon Beyond Mexico

3 min read

A Legacy of Empowerment and Outspoken Lyrics

“Rata inmunda, animal rastrero, escoria de la vida, adefesio malhecho…”

Thousands of women have passionately sung these verses, making “Rata de Dos Patas” one of the most iconic and scathing songs in Latin music history. The song, which became a battle cry against betrayal and machismo, was performed by Paquita la del Barrio, the Mexican singer who passed away this Monday at the age of 77.

“Infrahumano, espectro del infierno, maldita sabandija, ¡cuánto daño me has hecho!”

Released on the album Taco Placero (2000), the song unexpectedly became Paquita’s most celebrated hit. Ironically, the singer herself initially hesitated to record it, believing it was too aggressive. However, once she embraced it, the song became a defining piece of her career.

A Song That Defined a Generation

Performance after performance, “Rata de Dos Patas” became one of the most requested and applauded songs in her repertoire. Its direct and sarcastic lyrics resonated with audiences who saw it as a powerful anthem of resilience against toxic relationships.

Like many of Paquita’s songs, “Rata de Dos Patas” was conceived as a cathartic piece—a song to be belted out in moments of heartbreak or as a form of emotional release. Its bold lyrics, laced with irony and fierce condemnation, solidified her image as a champion for women who refused to remain silent in the face of mistreatment.

The Song’s Origins

The mastermind behind the song was Manuel Eduardo Toscano, a frequent collaborator of Francisca Viveros Barradas, better known as Paquita la del Barrio. Toscano had witnessed firsthand the way audiences reacted when Paquita performed her sharp, insult-laden songs.

“I thought, ‘What would happen if Paquita sang a song where every line was an insult to men?’ I already had the idea, but that night at her concert, I knew exactly how to shape it,” Toscano recalled in a YouTube interview.

When Paquita first heard the demo, she hesitated—finding it too provocative. But after sitting with it, she called Toscano and asked him not to give it to any other artist because she wanted it.

“It has been everything to me, worldwide,” she later acknowledged.

Who Was the Song Really About?

Paquita la del Barrio often spoke of the heartbreak and betrayal she had endured in her personal life. Her performances of “Rata de Dos Patas” were frequently emotional, leading many to assume the lyrics were inspired by a personal experience.

However, years after its release, Toscano finally revealed the true inspiration behind the song—and it wasn’t a former lover of Paquita’s.

“There was a former president—bald, with big ears—but of course, we couldn’t publicly insult a political figure like that,” Toscano shared in an interview with El Arte de la Canción.

Though he never explicitly named the person, the description unmistakably pointed to Carlos Salinas de Gortari, Mexico’s president from 1988 to 1994.

“It wasn’t written to insult just any man—it was inspired by this former president,” Toscano admitted.

A Masterpiece Born in Less Than an Hour

According to Toscano, writing the song was a quick process. “It took me less than an hour. I just focused on which insults fit each verse perfectly,” he said.

The song became a cornerstone of Paquita’s career, alongside other hits like Me Saludás a la TuyaQue Me Perdone Tu Perro, and Pobre Pistolita. Toscano and Paquita built a strong artistic partnership, with Paquita frequently praising his work.

“Every song this man gives me is a hit,” she once said.

A Timeless Anthem

More than two decades later, Rata de Dos Patas remains a powerful song that continues to be embraced by fans across generations. Whether sung in moments of anger, heartbreak, or simply as a humorous take on life’s disappointments, its raw energy ensures that Paquita la del Barrio’s legacy will live on.
