MAY 12,2025
MANILA, Philippines — Voting for the 2025 Philippine National and Local Elections officially ended on May 12, according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec). The polls closed both locally and overseas, but some precincts remained open past 7:00 p.m. to accommodate voters still in line. This follows Section 25 of Comelec Resolution 11076.
Comelec announced, “Tapos na ang botohan, local o overseas, ngayong May 12, 2025 National and Local Elections.”
Voting Ends Reports of Overvoting and Ballot Issues
Several voters shared their concerns online about overvoting. Senatorial aspirant Teddy Casiño was among those who posted complaints. Some voters said the ink on their ballots appeared to bleed through, potentially affecting votes on the back.
Comelec dismissed these claims. They explained that the layout of the ballots prevents ink from transferring to the other side in a way that would affect the count.
Voting Machine Glitches Hit Some Precincts
High temperatures caused some automated counting machines (ACMs) to fail. Poll workers replaced 311 malfunctioning machines throughout the day. Despite this, Comelec said the number was lower than the machine replacements during the 2022 elections.
Comelec Chair George Garcia said, “This is a better performance than in past elections. We responded quickly to most problems.”
Election Returns Begin to Arrive
As of 7:31 p.m., Comelec had received 10,030 election returns (ERs). They expect a total of 93,387 ERs. Electoral boards will begin printing returns after the last voters cast their ballots.
Voting Ends Comelec Calls the Election a Success
Despite delays and technical issues, Garcia described the 2025 elections as a success. He praised the smooth conduct of voting in most areas and the lower number of glitches compared to previous years. NOWTREND
