Washington Democrats Introduce Bill to Remove George Washington from State Flag

2 min read

A group of progressive Washington state lawmakers has introduced House Bill 1938, a proposal that could lead to the removal of George Washington’s image from the state flag. The bill, put forward by Democratic Representatives Strom Peterson, Julia Reed, and Greg Nance, seeks to establish a committee to design a new state flag that better represents the diversity and values of all Washingtonians.

Why Change the Flag?

Supporters of the bill argue that the current flag is outdated, difficult to reproduce, and does not accurately reflect Washington State’s unique history and identity. The flag, which prominently features a portrait of George Washington, has been criticized for its complex design, excessive use of colors, and lack of direct connection to the state’s history.

“While George Washington is an important national figure, he has limited historical connection to the state itself,” the bill states.

The lawmakers also emphasize that the flag’s intricate details make it hard to replicate, violating key flag design principles that prioritize simplicity.

Proposed Changes and Public Input

If passed, HB 1938 would establish a state flag redesign committee, including members from:

The Washington State Arts Commission

Legislators from the House and Senate

The Secretary of State

Historians, designers, and cultural leaders

Tribal representatives and citizen delegates from different regions

The committee would gather public feedback through schools, community forums, online surveys, and tribal consultations before finalizing a new design by July 1, 2028. However, the new flag would need voter approval in a general election before it could officially replace the current design.

Political Backlash and Public Reaction

The proposal has sparked backlash, especially from Republican lawmakers, who argue that Washington has more pressing issues to address.

“We have the third-highest crime rate in the nation. We have the third-highest cost of gas, the third-highest homeless population, and the fourth-most expensive housing. So this is what we need to be spending our time on? Are you kidding me?” said Republican State Rep. Brian Burnett in an interview with KPQ radio.

The bill is set for a public hearing on February 18 before the House Committee on State Government & Tribal Relations in Olympia.

A Growing Trend?

Washington is not the first state to reconsider its flag design. Minnesota lawmakers are currently debating changes to their 1893 state flag, which has been accused of containing racist imagery against Native Americans.

As the debate continues, the fate of George Washington’s presence on Washington’s state flag remains uncertain. Will voters approve a new design, or will the iconic image remain? The coming months will determine how the state proceeds with this controversial decision.
